Random Name Picker

Run a fair drawing from any list of names: raffles, classrooms, giveaways, and team drafts.

A fair name drawing needs two things: every name entered exactly once, and an unbiased draw. Assign each name a number, generate one random number in that range with duplicates off, and the matching name wins. For multi-round drawings, remove winners from the list between rounds.

The fair-draw method

Number your list from 1 to N, with each name appearing exactly once. Generate one random number in that range. The name at that position wins. Because each number is equally likely and each name maps to exactly one number, every name has the same chance.

Write down the list order and the drawn number before announcing. If anyone questions the result, you can show the method: the list, the range, and the draw. Transparency is what makes a drawing feel fair, not just be fair.

Classroom uses

Teachers use random pickers to call on students, form groups, and assign presentation order. Number the roster once and reuse it all semester; generate fresh numbers each time. Students accept random selection far more readily than teacher's choice, because the process is visibly neutral.

For group formation, generate N numbers with duplicates off, where N is the class size, then deal them out in order: the first k numbers are group one, the next k are group two, and so on.

Raffles and giveaways

For ticket raffles, the ticket numbers are your range: 1 to 500 for 500 tickets. Draw one number per prize with duplicates off so no ticket wins twice. For social media giveaways, number the eligible comments in the order they appear and draw the same way.

Keep a record: screenshot the numbered list and the result. For prizes with real value, that record is your defense if a loser complains. The draw itself takes seconds; the documentation is the actual work.

What to avoid

Do not redraw until you like the result. Redrawing until a preferred name appears is just choosing with extra steps, and people can tell. One draw, announced once, is the whole point.

Do not use a method where names have unequal weight unless the rules said so in advance. If some entries earned double tickets, expand the list so those names appear twice, then draw from the expanded list.

Name drawing questions

How do I pick a random name from a list?

Number the names from 1 to N, generate one random number in that range, and pick the name at that position. Give each name exactly one number so every name has an equal chance, then record the list order and the drawn number.

How do I draw multiple winners fairly?

Either remove each winner from the list before drawing again, or generate all the winning numbers in one draw with duplicates off so no name wins twice. Draw once per prize and accept every result.

Is a random name picker really fair?

Yes, provided every name appears exactly once in the numbered list and the random draw itself is unbiased. Fairness lives mostly in the setup: an honest list plus one clean draw beats any fancy tool applied to a sloppy list.
